Leah is mum to two boys and works as a nurse in Nottingham. Juggling shifts, family life and training, Leah got bitten by the triathlon bug and joined Long Eaton Triathlon club in 2016. Since then she has taken part many of our events including three of the Jenson Button Triathlons, Staunton Harold Triathlon, the North Derbyshire sportive, the South Derbyshire sportive and the East Midlands Airport 10k.
- What are your goals for 2018?
I’ve entered the Outlaw Half in May and it will be my first middle distance triathlon. I’m not aiming for an amazing time and my goal is to finish. I’m also planning on entering some of the triathlons I did this year to see if any of the extra training I’m putting in will make any difference.
- What inspired you to become involved in triathlon/running/cycling?
I swam competitively as a child and took up running when I was bored of the gym. I’d always wanted to do a triathlon but it wasn’t until I had my kids I got a bike and I finally took the plunge to try one. I also was hoping I could eat more cakes by doing more sport!
- What do you look for in an event?
I’m a sucker for a shiny medal. Apart from a medal I look for a friendly event with competitors around the same level as me (and not going to leave me way behind from the beginning). I also like events with fun runs or kids events as my kids often come and watch me and they love being part of it and getting a medal.
- What advice do you have for people who are thinking of getting involved in triathlons/running/cycling?
Don’t be scared – just do it! I wish I’d taken up triathlons earlier. Enter events to get yourself motivated to do training. Also plan your training, as I find life gets in the way otherwise. I work random shifts and have 2 small boys so I have to make sure I plan my training well. Finally, find friends you can do training with as its much more fun.
- What’s your favourite piece of sports equipment & why?
My triathlon watch, it has been invaluable for tracking my training and seeing the improvements I’ve made.
- What’s been your major achievement in sport so far?
I think it has to be my first triathlon as that was the hardest event I have ever done. This has led me to start open water swimming, enter sportives and try longer distances.
- Who is your favourite sports person that you follow on social media & why?
I don’t follow any sports person on social media (soz!)
- What would your autobiography be called?
“It’s just a phase” – it’s my mantra in all parts of my life especially with the kids.
- You have a private jet at the ready, who do you take? And where do you go?
My hubby (and maybe kids) and go to New Zealand, it’s an amazing country and I would love to visit it again.
Look out for Leah at our Spring Classic Sportive in April and Staunton Harold Triathlon in June. Good luck Leah!!
